Advanced Technologies Developed by Nuctech Make Efficient Non-destructive Fingerprint Identification Possible
Fingerprint as the most significant type of physical evidence is recognized as one of the most important ways of identifying a person in the world. However, due to the limitations of current processing methods, it is very difficult to lift fingerprints on site using tape.
 
Traditionally, fingerprints can be made visible through physical or chemical methods before being lifted from photographs, inevitably resulting in contamination or damage of the items being checked. Traditional optical testing methods, such as reflective or projected lighting technology, color separation testing technology and ultraviolet fluorescence technology, need to be applied by operators with technical expertise in a testing environment equipped with work conditions for a laboratory, while being unsuitable for on-site and in-situ testing.
 
The optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanner developed by JINSP Company Limited (JINSP), a company under Nuctech, enables in-situ, non-destructive, fast, ultra-high-resolution three-dimensional imaging of the internal structure of physical evidence on the spot, and measures the internal structure and optical characteristic parameters of objects. The OCT scanner is helpful in discovering latent physical evidence like fingerprints that cannot be found through conventional methods, making it efficient in fingerprint lifting.
 
The scanner was jointly developed by JINSP and the Institute of Forensic Science of China (IFSC) under the Ministry of Public Security of China and is powered by world-leading technologies in forensic science. The testing process does not require any pre-processing of the tape as evidence, and latent fingerprints on the sticky side of adhesive tape, double-sided adhesive tape and specific objects can be quickly and non-destructively identified on the spot.
In addition to the identification of latent fingerprints on the sticky side of adhesive tape, the OCT scanner developed by JINSP can also perform non-destructive and rapid testing of challenging physical evidence, such as paint and vermilion ink time series. In the industrial field, the scanner can be used to perform non-destructive, on-site, in-situ and rapid testing, such as welding defect testing of plastics and other polymer materials, and package integrity testing for capsules, etc.
