Airports deploy new security technologies to combat Covid-19, keeping civil aviation travelers and employees safe
2020 is an extraordinary year for us all, but even more so for the civil aviation industry. When challenged with the sudden and unexpected wave of Covid-19, the civil aviation industry found itself in an unusual spot where not only did it need to secure the safety of travelers, it was also tasked with the heavy burdens of combating case rebound domestically, taking extreme precautions in preventing confirmed cases from overseas from entering the country, conducting 24-hour non-stop disinfection, carrying out precise and targeted prevention and control measures, transporting important supplies and medical professionals in support of efforts to combat Covid-19, all the while facing the unprecedented blow back Covid-19 imposed on the global civil aviation industry.

We are happy to report that with tremendous and unremitting efforts from everyone nationwide, we are witnessing a steady curve for Covid-19 cases in the country. Air traveling and transportation market has finally bounded back to the right track. However, challenge still lies ahead for fall and winter seasons this year with international travelers coming into the country as cases overseas continue to spike. To eliminate the possibility of a Covid-19 case rebound, a conference call was held by China’s Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism of the State Council (JPCMSC) on July 31. In the meeting, JPCMSC urged governments and authorities at all levels to continue implementing strict Covid-19 control measures and executing efforts such as preventing case spikes resulting from domestic rebound and international travels with the same intensity as before. In addition, JPCMSC demanded strict implementation of the “four early stage measures” to the letter, containment of the spread of cases, and prevention of cases rising from gatherings with the highest level of alert.

Thus we can make sure positive cases are identified and treated in a timely manner, our control measures are precise, our treatment for these patients are effective, and our curve can stay flattened. On August 3, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) held a meeting between the Civil Aviation Pandemic Prevention and Control Leadership Group. Feng Zhenglin, Head of the CAAC, demanded to continue implementing strict Covid-19 control measures. Under the guidelines set forth by the general principal of “taking the situation seriously, taking scientific and reasonable approaches, and staying calm”. The fuse and incentive policy should be strictly implemented while making adjustments to airlines based on scientific grounds. Solid efforts are to be carried out in preventing confirmed cases from overseas from entering the country. Coronavirus must not be transmitted through air travels. Second, Director Feng instructed that all members of the civil aviation industry should have the confidence and determination to combat Covid-19 for the long haul with a consistent attitude. We should not relax mentally when battling this disease, or let exhaustion and optimism bias cloud our judgment. Control measures for key areas and venues should be implemented religiously and relentlessly with no exceptions to implementing all requirements laid out in control guidelines and pandemic prevention measures set in place by the Civil Aviation Administration of China. Third, we must focus on further refining pandemic prevention measures and keep close attention on any areas of improvement on our control measures to continuously improve the civil aviation emergency response system and the level of competence for emergency response. As next step actions, meticulous self inspections and special inspections on pandemic prevention readiness for fall and winter season would be a critical item in efforts to follow up with directions set forth in the conference call for all agencies/organizations under the umbrella of China’s civil aviation system.

It is understood that there are three main modes of transmission of Covid-19, namely, contact transmission, droplet transmission, and airborne transmission. Among the three, one can be effectively protected from droplet transmission and airborne transmission by wearing a mask, while contact transmission is difficult to prevent. Neither regular hand washing or gloves is able to provide 100% coverage. This is why the essential personnel are wearing PPEs when combating the virus. It can also explain why facilities and items placed in public venues such as airports require to be disinfected continuously.

At present, the civil aviation traveling and transportation market is experiencing a recovery. As the amount of carry-on baggage, items and checked baggage of civil aviation travelers is huge and they are scattered, it is near impossible to implement a thorough consistent 360° disinfection. But once Coronavirus is transmitted through airport security checkpoints between airport staff and travelers, we could be looking at cases resulting from contact transmission. While Covid-19 continues to spread across the world, it has become a common expectation for airports to disinfect the surface of traveler baggage and items. The same goes for the disinfection of surfaces of security scanner conveyor belts. Nuctech Company Limited (below referred to as “Nuctech”) has launched two non-contact disinfection solutions to take airports’ pandemic prevention efforts to the next level. They would surely fuel the measures taken by airports to combat Covid-19 during fall and winter seasons, providing all-round safety assurance for travelers and security check staff. The two solutions, UV disinfection solution of Nuctech X-ray security inspection equipment and UV disinfection solution for trays under Nuctech TRS system, are geared towards the above-mentioned challenges facing pandemic control efforts.

Kylin MV disinfection module (this module is adaptable and can be installed on existing security scanners without one)

Both solutions use short-wavelength ultraviolet (UVC) technology to achieve 24-hour non-contact and uninterrupted effective sterilization on passenger luggage, items, security check trays, etc. It will eliminate the risks of spreading bacteria and viruses between passengers and security check staff with the luggage, items and trays as carriers, effectively reduce the heavy workload of disinfection and sterilization, ensure the safety of passengers and security staff, and help improve the airports’ ability to fight epidemic with technology.

It is reported that short-wavelength ultraviolet (UVC) technology has been applied for many years in industries with high requirements for sanitary conditions, such as the food and sanitation industries. It can destroy the DNA or RNA molecular structure of bacteria and viruses, and is highly effective in killing bacteria and viruses, including the Coronavirus. With high bactericidal efficiency, it can complete disinfection and sterilization on bacteria and viruses within a short time; with a broad spectrum, it is effective to almost all kinds of bacteria and viruses. The specially designed ultraviolet disinfection lamp can provide high-efficiency and high-intensity short-wavelength ultraviolet (UVC) radiation to achieve quick and effective sterilization and disinfection. Besides, it is simple to maintain and inexpensive to use.

UV Disinfection Solution of Nuctech X-Ray Security Inspection Equipment

The UV sterilization and disinfection solution developed by Nuctech installs passageway protection plate at the entrance of the X-ray security inspection equipment. Ultraviolet disinfection lamps that can generate short-wavelength ultraviolet (UVC) are installed at the upper, left and right side of the protection plate and under the non-motorized roller table, which can sterilize and disinfect the luggage, packages and the surface of the conveyor belt that would pass through the X-ray security inspection equipment. This solution is highly effective in killing bacteria and viruses attached to the passenger luggage, packages and conveyor belts, preventing further spread of bacteria and viruses and protecting passengers and security staff from the harm of various infectious diseases.

The UV sterilization solution can be directly installed on new equipment, or on the existing equipment through a simple upgrade. This solution is applicable to all CX product series for the security inspection of carry-on luggage, checked luggage, and large cargo.

UV Disinfection Solution for Trays under Nuctech TRS System
In response to the integrated solution of the integrated security inspection channel (TRS) of civil aviation, Nuctech has launched an upgraded solution for tray sterilization with its own intellectual property rights, creating a safer sanitary environment for passengers and security staff.

UV Disinfection Solution for Trays under Nuctech TRS System

In the TRS integrated system, the technologically upgraded UV sterilization solution adopts the mature and reliable ultraviolet light (UVC) sterilization technology to effectively sterilize the trays during the return process, eliminating the risks of spreading bacteria and viruses between passengers and security staff with trays as carriers. Nuctech UV sterilization and disinfection solution adds a UV sterilization module to the return path of the TRS lower tray. The sterilization module is equipped with ultraviolet bactericidal lamps at the upper, lower, left and right side, which can achieve all-round sterilization and disinfection of the tray without dead corners.

This solution has two major features:
First, it can quickly eliminate the bacteria and viruses on the surface of the tray, protecting passengers and staff from getting infected and spreading diseases by touching the trays. Second, the modular design makes it easy for installation on the existing TRS system.

In addition, in response to the needs of epidemic prevention and control at airports, railway stations, subways and Customs checkpoints, Nuctech has launched a series of solutions, including the WeSpace series of sterilizers, disinfection cabinets, quarantine units for epidemic control, quarantine units for sampling, automatic spray disinfection systems for container vehicles and iGuard TM epidemic control robots (disinfection version). It is a demonstration of how science and technology can help prevent and control the epidemic.
