The Stationary CT Security Inspection Research Project Jointly Initiated by Tsinghua University and NUCTECH Passes the Assessment on Scientific and Technological Achievements

On May 17, ZKHC, a third-party professional agency for scientific and technological achievement evaluation recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, in accordance with relevant provisions of the Science and Technology Evaluation Measures issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology, standards and procedures for evaluating scientific and technological achievements, as well as principles of being reasonable, independent, objective and impartial, organized 9 experts in related fields to assess the scientific and technological achievements of the Stationary CT Baggage/Parcel Intelligent Inspection System Based on Distributed X-ray Sources and Its Key Technologies project jointly completed by Tsinghua University and NUCTECH.

The expert committee for this assessment consists of Zhang Huanqiao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Senior Researcher of China Institute of Atomic Energy, Zhao Zhentang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Researcher of the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (SARI-CAS), Hou Li'an, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor of Rocket Force University of Engineering, Dong Guoxuan, Executive Deputy Director and Researcher of the Mathematical and Physics Sciences Department of the National Natural Science Fund of China, Wang Liming, Chief Expert and Researcher of China National Nuclear Corporation Strategy and Management Advisory Committee, Wei Cunfeng, Director and Researcher of the Nuclear Technology Application Research Center of the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Zhao Xing, Director of the Inspection and Imaging Laboratory of the School of Mathematical Sciences, Capital Normal University, Wang Juntao, Chief Engineer and Researcher of China Institute of Aviation Technology, Zheng Junzheng, Senior Researcher of the National Institute of Radiological Protection, China CDC.

Wang Xuewu, Director of the Department of Engineering Physics of Tsinghua University, relevant persons in charge of Tsinghua’ University’s research institutes, key leaders of NUCTECH, and more than ten key members of the project team also participated in the assessment meeting.

Experts visited and inquired about workshops in the Miyun production and R&D base of NUCTECH, evaluated the presentation made by the project team leader at the assessment meeting, and reviewed relevant documents such as research technical data and novelty reports. After a challenge and defense meeting, the expert group has reached a consensus that the project meets the urgent demands for fast and accurate security inspection in customs, civil aviation, logistics and other industries. Based on the carbon nanotube cold cathode distributed X-ray source, the research on the imaging physics and modes of static CT has been completed by the project, and innovative imaging system solutions have been put forward, and corresponding key technologies such as data fusion, image reconstruction and target recognition have been developed. The project has taken the lead in developing a static CT intelligent inspection system based on carbon nanotube cold cathode distributed X-ray sources in the world. The project’s achievements have been put into use at civil aviation and customs sites, significantly improving inspection efficiency, highly effective in inspecting large luggage items and conducting fast and accurate inspection, achieving the transformation of related scientific and technological achievements, and having broad market prospects. These achievements can provide advanced technology and equipment for civil aviation security inspection and anti-explosion as well as inspection of drugs and smuggling at customs. This technology is world-leading overall. After a comprehensive review by the expert group, the participating experts unanimously agreed that the Stationary CT Baggage/Parcel Intelligent Inspection System Based on Distributed X-ray Sources and Its Key Technologies project passed the assessment on scientific and technological achievements.
